Every believer faces daily choices that determine whether we walk in the way of life or drift into destruction. Proverbs 16:17 reminds us, “The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul.” This “highway” is more than just a metaphor for good living—it is a Spirit-led journey where God Himself directs our steps. The path of the upright is not found through self-effort or willpower alone; it is sustained by the presence of the Holy Spirit within us. To stay on His highway, we must make sure that He is truly on board, guiding every part of our journey.
The call to be filled with the Spirit is not optional for the Christian life—it is essential. Paul wrote in Ephesians 5:18, “Be filled with the Spirit,” using a verb that suggests continuous action. Being filled is not a one-time event that happened years ago; it is an ongoing daily choice to yield to God’s presence. Without the Spirit, we rely on our own strength, which always proves insufficient when temptation comes or when decisions must be made. But with the Spirit filling us, we are empowered to live above sin, strengthened to endure trials, and made sensitive to the gentle voice of God’s leading. The Spirit’s presence is what keeps us on the highway of holiness.
Yet, being filled with the Spirit requires us to draw near to God in faith and surrender. James 4:8 tells us, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” The Holy Spirit fills those who are hungry and willing to yield every part of their lives. A half-surrendered vessel cannot carry the fullness of His power. Too often, believers want God’s guidance while still clinging to their own ways. But if we long for His presence, we must invite Him to take full possession—our thoughts, desires, plans, and decisions. When we draw near with open hands, asking God to fill us completely, He does not withhold Himself. Instead, He responds by pouring His Spirit into every area, equipping us to walk the road He has prepared.
This is vital because the Holy Spirit knows the way we are to go, while we do not. Proverbs 14:12 warns, “There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” How often have we made choices that felt good at the moment, only to find they led us into regret and heartache? Our natural reasoning, emotions, and desires can mislead us, but the Spirit never will. He not only knows the direction we should take; He also knows the dangers along the path. He is not simply a guide walking beside us; He is the very presence of God within us, steering our hearts, convicting us when we stray, and confirming truth as we walk. By following His lead, we remain on God’s highway, preserved from detours and hidden traps that would destroy us.
The Christian journey is not meant to be lived in confusion or uncertainty. God has provided a clear path for His people—the highway of the upright. But to stay on that path, we must live filled with the Spirit, drawing near daily in faith, and trusting Him to guide our steps. When He is on board, we are never truly lost, no matter what twists and turns life brings. If you want to experience His preserving power, make this your prayer each day: “Holy Spirit, fill me, lead me, and keep me on Your highway.” With Him on board, you can walk in confidence, knowing that the One who knows the way is faithfully guiding you home.
