Destiny: One-on-One

John 4

In the heat of a noontime sun, a woman made her way to a well. She wasn’t expecting anything unusual—just another trip for water, another day in a long string of weary days. She had no idea that this would be the moment her life changed forever.

The Samaritan woman’s past was marked by broken relationships and failed expectations. But on this day, she would meet the King—One-on-One—and everything would change.

A Personal Parallel

I understand her story in a personal way. In the struggle for my own family to remain together, i went through a divorce in my past, just like the woman at the well,  I often longed just to be with my bride. In moments of tears, anger, and frustration,  Jesus spoke up witnin me and whispered, “That’s how I feel about My Bride, the Church.”

God has a deep longing to be with us. We were created to seek Him—even when we don’t realize that’s what we’re searching for. Like the woman at the well, we chase after things that promise satisfaction: a relationship, a house, a job, or even an easy life with comfort and leisure. But there is only One who can truly quench our thirst.

Led by the Spirit

John 4:4 says Jesus “must” go through Samaria. I believe that word “must” reveals a divine appointment. Perhaps that morning, in prayer, the Father impressed it on His heart: There’s someone you need to meet today. John 3:8 says the Spirit blows where He wills—Jesus was moved by the Spirit to that well.

And there He met her—this five-time divorcee, now living with a man she wasn’t married to. Her encounter with Jesus reminds us that His grace meets us before we have everything “fixed.” You don’t have to have it all together, dressed up and looking your best, to meet the King.

The Well Within

In verses 13–14, Jesus offers the woman living water—water that would become a well within her, springing up to eternal life.

This is the work of the Holy Spirit. Acts 17 reminds us that in Him we live, move, and have our being. If we belong to Jesus, His Spirit lives within us. Our bodies are His temple. We can fellowship with Him continually—but we also need set-apart times to meet with Him alone, “God dates” where we quiet the noise and draw from the deep well inside.

From this well comes revelation, wisdom, and strength (1 Corinthians 2:10–16). Proverbs 18:24 calls the Spirit a Friend who sticks closer than a brother. He knows the mind of God. He knows your situation. He knows the breakthrough you need—and the exact path to get you there.

Guarding Your Focus

While Jesus was talking with the woman, the disciples returned from town with food. But His heart was fixed on something greater. He told them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” His “food” was to do the will of His Father and finish His work (John 4:34).

In the same way, distractions constantly pull at us—the world’s system, the pull of our old nature, and the schemes of the enemy. Sports, politics, entertainment, or social drama might not be evil in themselves, but if they consume all our energy, they will leave us spiritually empty.

We must guard against influences that pull us away from intimacy with God. The world is not our home; we are pilgrims here (1 Peter 4:4). Our flesh will always demand comfort and attention. And the enemy will do whatever he can to keep us from stepping into our God-given purpose.

Living for the Father’s Dream

As the Samaritan woman ran to tell her city about Jesus, she was stepping into her destiny. Jesus, watching her, told His disciples: “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me.”

That same purpose is meant to be our food. God says in Jeremiah 29:11, “I know the plans I have for you.” He created you for good works. When we seek Him with all our heart, He reveals our purpose—and that purpose becomes the driving force of our lives.

I’ve learned that sometimes, when the enemy hits you harder than he intended, it can awaken something powerful within you. In my own life, God has turned seasons of pain into launching points for His calling. When the Holy Spirit empowers you, you will know it. You’ll sense His presence within and see His power working around you.

The True Meat of Life

Physical food sustains our bodies, but the true satisfaction comes from living the dream we were created for—working alongside God, loving Him, and loving others. This is our destiny: to walk in step with the King, One-on-One, every day.

The Samaritan woman came for water and left with a purpose. That same invitation is open to us. The King is waiting—by a well, in a quiet moment, in the middle of our ordinary day—ready to meet us One-on-One and lead us into our destiny.
